Words by Jesse Serwer—
Mr. Lexx hasn’t put out an album in a dozen years—not since his first, AKA…Mr. Lex, back before he had to change his name from Lexxus. Good news then that one of our favorite deejays is finally ready to unleash a followup, LEXXICON: The Lexx Factor (FiWi Music/21 Music Group). Building on Lexx’s recent success dabbling outside of traditional dancehall waters with Major Lazer, Congorock and the like, “Rugu Rugu” and “Pon Mi” meet dancehall and experimental electronic vibes halfway. The onomatopoeic “Rugu Rugu” is a brief and visceral story about sudden machine gun blasts; the latter an ethereal sex tune. Behind both and, in fact, the whole project is up-and-coming Jamaican producer, The Wizard, the daughter of one Beres Hammond. Stay tuned to LargeUp for more on The Wizard here soon—and look out for the “Rugu Rugu” video, too.
