Leave it to our inimitable Mixtape Mondays columnist Deejay Theory to set the summer off proper. Just in time for BBQ season, he’s just dropped a “Summa Pack” of DJ-friendly remixes on us, featuring brand-new reworkings of Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved,” Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” and an unlikely pairing of JC Lodge’s “Someone Loves You Honey” and raps from those amorous Panabaynians, Los Rakas.
The standout, though, is “Call Me a Marley,” a blend of Stylo G’s UK dancehall smash, “Call Me A Yardie,” with Theory’s aforementioned “Could You Be Loved.” With its “We smoke weed nah sniff Charlie, so we haffi big up the legend Bob Marley” refrain, “Call Me a Yardie” obviously cries out for a blend of this nature, and surely others have tried it. But Theory really went above the call of duty, creating one of those universal tracks that can fit any kind of set or setting. Listen to “Call Me a Marley” below, download the whole Summa Pack here, and check out a bonus trap-hall remix of Buju’s “Crazy Talk” below.
