Dancing in The Street Courtesy of Malibu Rum

Words by j-RockaZ

Q: What is life without a little strong drink?

A: Boring! (at least according to many West Indians)

Besides, a little libations never hurt anyone. In fact, a large part of the Caribbean lifestyle involves blissful enjoyment and leisurely reflections on life complimented by sunshine, the ocean breeze, spirits and ale. It’s part of the day’s rhythm. You know!

This window into the culture is framed in the quirky, yet subtle humor of Malibu Caribbean Rum’s latest campaign titled “Radio MaliBoom Boom”. UK based ad agency Publicis London really nailed it with the pet goat named “Snowflake” and the catchy slogan, “BOOM BOOM MALIBOOM” (designed to be repeated out loud while enjoying feel good Caribbean music, good times and of course the smooth taste of the Malibu coconut rum) The ads are spot on funny.

And Malibu isn’t limited to traditional advertising. In the blink of an eye, a Flash of lightning and some help from the Black Gold dance crew (led by dancer/choreographer Hanna Herbertson) Malibu surprised everyone in City Hall Park one recent summer afternoon here in NYC. Check it out!

In the same vein but with a change of palette, Red Stripe’s ad campaign and the Lee “Scratch” Perry , Guinness ads that ran a few years ago have inspired many laughs with old and new friends I met while sipping our favorite brews. Among other things, the West Indies serve up a timeless sense of humor that keeps the wittiest folks on their toes. By the way, that’s two thumbs up for the yanks over at BBDO ad agency who executed both of these campaigns. Watch. Sip. Enjoy.
