Venus in Black: Naomi Campbell x Interview Mag

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton, via Interview

Ducked out of SOBs Thursday night to grab my usual DJ-dinner of power bar and  Vitamin Water from the bourgie deli on Varick street when who to my wondering eyes did appear than the one Ms. Naomi Campbell, high-beaming me from the cover of Interview magazine. As you may have noticed we are dedicated Naomi-watchers over here at LargeUp–whether she’s owning the runway or the witness stand at the World Court–but this particular spread gave us such a meal that our eye-cups almost ranneth over. I’m not sure whether she is answering or exploiting her recent controversies with these images of her in dominatrix mode, gal-handling a tatted up, artificially white boytoy. Personally, I like to think he symbolizes the fashion industry or possibly the media itself–which Naomi has just bitch-slapped into submission for daring to attempt an escape from her hypnotic gaze.

Feel free to take the pics below and construct your own fantasy, and then read the full Q&A with art-world icon Tony Shafrazi here. Shafrazi, of course, is a controversial story in and of himself–and when you’re done reading about Naomi’s ballerina mother and how super-model solidarity from Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista helped to kick over racial barriers in the fashion world, it’ll be worth tracking down last year’s all-interview issue of Bidoun to read about his experiences in pre-revolutionary Iran and his arrest for slashing up a Picasso.
