Trendwatchers know that Clarks have stood the test of time while effortlessly (it seems) crossing into the streetwear fashion culture that was vibrant prior to the recession. This is partly due to brand loyalty that just won’t quit, and partly due to the fact that Clarks Originals has been steadily engaging in strategic collaborations with all the right people, satisfying the collector’s urge by multiplying styles and color-ways. In the process they seem to have carved out a niche in the post-recession economy as the shoe for sneakerheads who have outgrown sneakers–with a little help from a certain dancehall deejay, of course. If you’ve been tuning in for a while now, you already know how much we here at LargeUp have always appreciated a fine pair of Clarks–like, since way before the Vybz Kartel hit made waves. That goes double for yours truly and Fashion Week seemed like the perfect opportunity to talk about where I see this shoemaker headed and render a list of some the coolest Clarks mine eyes have seen. Can I get an “Amen?” Chu’ch.
10. Wallabee Chestnut
“Timeless” is the word. These are my personal favorite. I’m actually going to order another pair today just in case I started a frenzy.
9. Clarks Chinese Dragon
This shoe was released by Clarks in 2008. Given the 36 Chambers album and their martial arts inspired collective personality, I have to figure these are probably a favorite of the entire Wu-Tang Clan, with Ghostface AKA the “Wally Champ” (as in Wallabee) leading the way. Let’s not forget they made their mark with their Wu-Wear brand of Wallabee styled shoes back in the 90’s. I’d like to see Ghostface with his own Clarks limited edition Collabo–call it the “Killahbee.”
8. Clarks Originals 60th Anniversary
Also a member of 60th anniversary collection, this shoe is a classic in my book. Let’s just say I know someone from every corner of the globe that will appreciate the practicality of that nifty little pocket.
7. 60th Anniversary Union Jack Desert Boot
In celebration of the Desert Boot’s 60th anniversary, Clarks Originals released a special edition shoe decorated with the British tricolor pattern. I’m not saying I’d wear the Union Jack upon my feet but I might encourage rigging up a dancehall style soundsystem in the court yard of Buckingham Palace with the one Gappy Ranks pon the mic. But wait, a flag pon a shoe? If you’re thinking what I’m thinking then its Carnival time…Clarks, holla at your American bwoy!
6. Ronnie Fieg Fall 2010
Ronnie is a dude doing big things. If you want to know about the sneaker/shoe game, Google him. You can find his Clarks Collabos and more at the David Z flagship store or online. Combines the classic simplicity of the Originals with the exclusive appeal of a limited edition.
5. Atmos Fall/Winter 2009
This Japan-based boutique gets the job done and does a great job of showcasing the Wallabee as a creative canvas similar to the Nike Dunks and Air Force One shoes. The red and green lumberjack plaids were a home run with urban woodsmen and r&b singers alike.
4. Concepts Fall 2010
The streetwear boutique Concepts is currently showing a dope (but not yet as popular) style of Clarks called the Weaver boot. This me likes. If Clarks-mania continues, the Weaver is poised to be one of the next styles to dominate foot fashion as the mainstream catches on to the basic styles and connoissieurs step up their game accordingly.
3. Stussy collaboration
This company is one of the originators of the cool t-shirt/streetwear movement. All I have to say is, Duck down! These joints right here are made with ballistic nylon–so maybe we can expect to see a Kevlar desert boot somewhere down the line as well?
2. Pretty Green Fall and Winter 2010,
Pretty Green is new company owned by Oasis front-dude Liam Gallagher. Sing along please: I don’t believe that anybody /feels the way I do about you now…. Rock these on a buttondown shirt kind of day or even with a fresh white tee (not too fitted).
1. Wallabee Akasha
This limited edition run is the latest addition to the Clarks Originals family. Still, they’re pure pedigree and awesome. It’s like a pair of Nike trainers meets Wallabees with New Balance in there somewhere. You should see them in red. Hot!…love at first site for any Trini or Manchester United fanatic.
