Mixtape Mondays: Penthouse Records, Teflon, DJ Arems + More

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

If you are Trini, Dominican, Haitian, Colombian or just like to get mad you are probably suffering from an extended Carnival hangover this Monday, which means you might need an extra-fortified Mixtape Mondays to get you through all 35 remaining days of Lent (when its clearly time to get mad again, Catholic or not).  Shall we begin?

Deadly Dragon Sound, Penthouse Records Special on EVR, (via East Village Radio): Throwback scientists Deadly Dragon put down an excellent reggae set on EVR every Monday evening, but last week they went even deeper than usual, dedicating the entire show to releases on the legendary Penthouse label (including classic Buju, Beres, Tony Rebel and Wayne Wonder 45s, as well as early gems from riddimatical genius Dave Kelly). They even got Penthouse founder/producer Donavan Germain on the phone for an interview, bumping this one into collector’s item status. Get the backstory and tracklisting here and go to the March 7 archive at EVR for the audio–and then chune in tonight from 6-8pm for the new show!

Selecta Killa f. Teflon, Lava Mixtape, (via Federation Sound): Max & crew put us up on this new joint featuring wicked new artist Teflon, not to mention Federations triple-uranium Flatlands riddim. Download it here and get the tracklist and cover art here.

DJ Arems & Faction Sound Crew, Fiyah fi Bun Dem Part 5 Mix CD (via Faction): This is a refreshingly straightforward dancehall mix from our dude Arems from the requisite boom tunes to the requisite lingerie models on the cover, organized by riddim (remember riddims?) and touching a good cross-section of newish material from Badda Don to Cosa Nostra. Get artwork and info here, then download here.

DJ Tony Tempo, Bacchanal Radio Ash Wednesday edition: (via Podomatic): Atlanta selector Tony Tempo  is quickly joining our list of go-to selectors when we need to get up on soca runnings. He is not letting post-Carnival slump slow him down none either, going deep on road mixes of the season’s favorites. Stream it here.
