Cable Clash: Major Lazer Cartoon Characters Revealed!

Words by Jesse Serwer (via Mad Decent)

Talk of a Major Lazer series on the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block has circulated for a minute, and Switch discussed its progress in an interview with the Onion‘s A/V Club a full year ago. Today, the first images confirming the show’s existence emerged on the Internet and, if you weren’t already psyched on the thought of a one-armed Jamaican cyborg/dancehall concept project mascot getting his own show on a major US cable network, we’re like 100 percent sure you will be now. While seeing an animated version of LargeUp friend/Major Lazer frontman/real-life cartoon Skerrit Bwoy is both incredibly strange and ridiculously overdue, the biggest coup here is that Lee “Scratch” Perry–or, at least, an incredible likeness of him–will be featured on the show. A cartoon depiction of Jamaican culture inspired by a British/American hipster musical project is sure to draw critics, but the involvement of none other than the Upsetter himself should quiet at least a few skeptics.

Throw in a two-tone-hair-sporting, big-busted bad gyal named Zola and a pair of purple wizard types named Dumplin and Grayberry (In keeping with Major Lazer’s mid-80s vibe, illustrator Ferry Gouw‘s animation has a He-Man/Smurfs bent), and we’re figuring this for the greatest mixture of music culture and pixels since Beavis met Butthead, sight unseen.

Check the rest of the characters after the jump, and our latest webisode with Diplo for more on the inspiration behind Major Lazer.
