Mixtape Mondays: Black Chiney, Sensi Movement, Massive B & Safari Sound

Words by DJ Theory and Eddie STATS Houghton

Black Chiney, 10 Year Anniversary Mix: What can you really say about Black Chiney? Members Supa Dups, Walshy Fire, Bobby Chin and Willy Chin have been callin’ shots and murdering sounds for years and years with no tears. Ten years, specifically, and they’ve just launched a mix CD and tour to commemorate that fact. The silky r&b special intro (from Notch?) is so sick, moving directly into a plate of the hiphop reggae remixes that made them famous in the first place, including the Vybz Kartel remix of Eminem’s Supa Dups-produced “W.T.P“. The mix closes out with a grip of their classic live sets and a preview of their 10th Anniversary Tour, which starts May 14th in their homebase of Miami, then heads to Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe. Make plans accordingly and download the mix here, or stream at Soundcloud.

Sensi Movement, Life Over Death (Mixed by Fahda Sensi): Wicked new mix here from Germany’s Sensi MovementLife Over Death is not just a strong name for a reggae mixtape, but the title applies itself as the theme throughout the hour- and-twenty-minute trip. Khago, I Octane, Jah Vinci, Konshens, and plenty other big young voices from JA can be heard, sealed up with airtight mixes, minimal sound effects and crisp cover art. Tracklist and download here.

Massive B, We Going Global An Worldwide: NYC’s Massive B (Brooklyn DJ/Producer Bobby Konders & Bronx MC Jabba, among others) have been blessing NYC and international Caribbean communities since the mid-90s. If you’re a reggae DJ there’s a  good chance you have some tunes (hopefully on 7″) on the Massive B label, and if you live in the tristate area you’ve either heard them live on HOT97, or seen Bobby & Jabba handling dances from their Fire Sundays party in BK to the massive (pun intended) West Indian Day Parade every year. We Going Global An Worldwide is a testament to Massive B’s healthy international network of fans and supporters, making it clear right off the bat with a special from Jah Cure of one of our fav tunes of ’11 so far, “Like I See It” feraturing heavyweights Mavado and Ricky Ross (who also contribute dubs to the next track.) For more info on Bobby Konders and Massive B, get the back-story here. Download We Going Global An Worldwide here.

Safari Sound, Kingsize Ballads Vol. 1: Sweden’s Safari Sound is no stranger to Mixtape Mondays. All the mixes they release are on point, and we’re not mad at Kingsize Ballads either. The first 30 minutes or so keep the pace nice an easy, warming you up for what’s in store. Some choice dubs and flips from Demarco and Kartel over big rap singles “Six Foot Seven” and “Hustle Hard” make their way in, and soon after you’re just let loose into the dancehall safari…  Pack an umbrella ’cause Safari is dropping shells right now. Tracklist and download here.
