Mixtape Mondays: Walshy Fire, DJ/Rupture, G-Sharp

Words by DJ Theory

More big tunes and global explorations over here at Mixtape Mondays, with three new bits of summer to brighten up your week.

Walshy Fire, Riddimstream Vol. 5: Another extra large mix from Miami LargeUp contributor, member of Black Chiney Sound and all around boss Walshy Fire. Made in partnership with reggae marketing company Riddimstream, Riddimstream Vol. 5, as with previous editions of the series, acts as an overview of the best dancehall singles and riddims promoted by Riddimstream. Dancehall music seems to be moving faster than ever these days, with releases sprinting into inboxes with record speed. There’s inevitably a lot more material to sift through, and it can get a little hectic…Lucky for us, whether you’re a DJ, a fan or just enrolled in daggering lessons at your local club, Walshy has taken the time to sort things out, and to get you up to di time. Tracklist and download here.

DJ/Rupture, Mudd Up! show 7/4/11: In the spirit of last week’s Independence Day post, we have a July 4 mix from globetrotting, genre-bending brother DJ/Rupture. Rupture and a sizable family of artists (Matt Shadetek, Geko Jones, Jahdan, Uproot Andy, Chief Boima, etc.) comprise NYC’s Dutty Artz collective. Recognized for their “New York Tropical” sound, Dutty Artz has had, and will no doubt continue to have, a hand in bringing new and original crossover sounds to a global audience. Cumbia, dancehall, dubstep, roots, bass, 2 step, grime, the music of Africa, South and Latin America, the Middle East and beyond all make their way into the Dutty Artz repertoire and parties. Rihanna, a whole heap of Vybz Kartel and Dutty Artz member Kalul Linzy’s new collaboration with James Franco (yes, that James Franco) all factor into Rupture’s recent mix from his Mudd Up! show on WMFU (A show that he is currently seeking a production assistant for.) Tracklist and stream here, and catch up on the archives and guest mixes here.

DJ G-Sharp, Leggo Of Mi Chutney Rum: Chutney mix! Some new vibes for Mixtape Mondays courtesy of Chicago’s G-Sharp of Tropical Storm Sound. Hailing originally from Toronto, where every flavor of soca is always in season, G-Sharp selects from soca’s chutney pot and serves up a quick mix of favorites. We can almost taste the rum punch…Download and stream here.
