Mixtape Mondays: DJ Gravy x Teddy King, DJ Delgado, DJ Higher

Words by DJ Theory

Whoa, gosh. Another Mixtape Mondays is here, peelin back some of the ruffest and tuffest bad boy remixes, vinyl crackles, and dancehall murderation. Let’s get right down to business.

DJ Gravy x DJ Teddy King, Back In Time (via Boundless NY): This one is a boomshot! LargeUp’s hustler-in-chief DJ Gravy has combined forces with New York City streetwear shop Boundless NY (Check our recent webisode on their skate team) and Boundless’ own DJ Teddy King for what is sure to be an instant classic in the reggae mixtape world. Back In Time lives up to its title, combining crucial 90’s hiphop and reggae remixes with Rice & Peas microphone don dada Micro Don playing host in traditional “live” mixtape style. Some may say many of these artists were in their prime during this era, with deejays like Cutty Ranks, Capleton, Beenie Man, Spragga Benz, Lexxus, Shaggy & Rayvon, Bounty Killer, Mega Banton and Super Cat all bringing their A-game on timeless cuts like “Wings Of The Morning,” “Ghetto Red Hot,” “Holla,”  “Big Up,” “Cellular Phone,” “Sound Boy Killing,” “Living Condition” and more. Being the veteran selectors and aficionados that they are, Gravy and Teddy also made sure to cut up strictly vinyl for the recording of this mix. Can’t forget to big up man like Herbert Spliffington and James Farsetta on the original 90’s 12″ style artwork as well, easily some of the wickedest art for a mixtape I can remember, way too bad. Pree the cover above and download the mix here

If you’d like to get your hands on one of these limited edition bad boys, send $15 ($10 for the CD and $5 for S&H) through pay pal to teddyking@boundlessny.com.

DJ Delgado, Fire Vol. 8: Staying in the all-vinyl and classics format for a minute, let’s take a stroll over to the Bay to connect with Oakland and Aztlan Roots’ DJ Delgado. For Fire Vol 8, Delgado digs into the crates to pull some serious essentials from the vault. Nothing past the early 90’s here, and Delgado’s many years of collecting and appreciating reggae music can be heard throughout this crackly 7″ trip. Delgado described it best saying, “keeping these great old songs and talents alive despite our disposable consumerist society is hugely important to me, and may be my biggest strength as a DJ.” Keep doing your part sir –salute! Tracklist info and download here.

DJ Higher, Dancehall Summa 2011: As much as we love the throwback mixes, you know we gotta keep things up to di time here at Mixtape Mondays as well, and for that we have Los Angeles’ DJ Higher on deck. Repping Positive Rhythm Sound and Pum Pum Tuesdays, Higher comes correct on an hour-plus of dancehall heat clinging on tight to the last month of summer. LA doesn’t really have much to worry about in that department, but I know folks on the East Coast will appreciate mixes like this once the winter rolls around. Tracklist and stream here (and beaucoups respects to dancehall connoisseur Dana Shayegan for the heads up! –ed.)
