Mixtape Mondays: Sensi Movement x Bramma, Papalote Hi-Fi, Louis Basslines

Words by DJ Theory

After last week‘s Carnival madness we’re right back in the grind this Monday, with new mixes from Germany, Australia and San Francisco. Let’s dig right in, shall we?

Sensi Movement x Bramma, Nah Truss People: Germany’s Sensi Movement (selectors Fahda Sensi, Gully R, King P, DJ Reppy and Jan Haze) are back in full force, this time in official combination with young JA talent and member of the Big Ship recording family, Bramma. With a handful of big tunes under his belt already, Bramma has one of the most unique vocal tones and delivery in the industry. Fahda Sensi meanwhile does an excellent job of showcasing his talents. With tunes like “Bad Fi Real”, “Defend  Mi Own”, “Ghetto Man Dream”, the title track “Nah Truss People” and 15 custom dubplates built for the mix, this should appease not only Bramma fans but anyone who’s looking for a serious new dancehall mix to add to the library. Stream, tracklist and download here.

DJ MR. E x Mary Jane Clothing, Music High (via Mary Jane): When you think San Francisco, you may think of amazing burritos. Less likely but also possible is that you may be thinking reggae. Yet I have a feeling you wouldn’t think the two could ever be as successfully paired with each other as they have in the form of Papalote Hi-Fi, for over a decade. One of my first pieces for LargeUp was with Miguel Escobedo, co-owner of Papalote Mexican Grill and one half of Papalote Hi-Fi w/ DJ M. Clarin, because I was that impressed with the combination of good food, phenomenal musical taste, and, above all else, heart. Although he’s constantly tending to his two restaurant locations, MR. E is considered one of the true OG’s in the San Francisco DJ community and still keeps a regular DJ schedule. He also has a lengthy and high-quality catalog of mixtapes ranging from roots reggae mixes to instrumental hip-hop tapes, to his Badu x Sade tributes (all recommended and all available for free here). Music High, his most recent effort,  is a collaboration with budding (pun intended) SF-based women’s clothing line Mary Jane.  So whether it’s a burrito or a big head, make sure you roll somethin’ up for this one. Stream and download here.

Basslines, Australien in New York (via Inna Riddim): DJ Louis a.k.a Basslines, one of our peoples on the very far side of the pond, blesses this week’s MM with a thorough mix of dancehall and a few other uptempo bits. Having spent some time in NYC this past year working with our own DJ Gravy, this Austr-alien has delivered a solid mix to share with listeners on this side of the world and all his folks down under. Australien in New York leads off with a wicked intro salute to the one Tippa Irie featuring the stylings of Anthony B, General Levy (not to be confused with Ali G) and Eccleton Jarret.  Nobody move, nobody get hurt… Tracklist and download here, stream below. below
