Monday comes around every week and just as sure as the sun will shine, we’re back with some new mixes to nice up your week from the depths of Brooklyn, Jamaica and London. Brighten up.
Dre Skull, Mixpak for Mixmag (via Mixmag): NYC’s Dre Skull graces the pages of LargeUp once again, this time in mixtape form. He recently did an exclusive mix and interview for leading dance and club culture magazine Mixmag highlighting some current and upcoming releases from his ever-expanding Mixpak Records imprint. The mix includes tunes exclusively from the Mixpag catalog with big remixes and originals from the likes of deep tropical bass maestro’s Dubbel Dutch, Melé and L-Vis 1990, plus carnival marauders Schlachthofbronx and Toddla T, tech-house champ Justin Martin remixing ATL’s Lil’ Scrappy, Jamaican bad gyal Ms Thing, and the one and only Vybz Kartel. Peep the interview here, stream and download the mix here.
Cherine Anderson, JA 9-25 (via Boomshots): The queen of dancehall soul just blessed her fans on her birthday with a free mixtape, packed with 13 tracks of new material. Cherine Anderson has one of the smoothest and sexiest voices coming out of JA today, with a sultry delivery not unlike a Caribbean Goapele. Showcasing a different side of her on “The Break Up Song,” she gets real over an unexpected, minimal beat produced by Odd Future’s Syd Tha Kid (who happens to be Cherine’s cousin, FYI). Stream that tune and download the full mix here.
Richie Blood, Reggae Meets Rap: London DJ/producer Richie Blood just dropped a mix that we usually welcome around here, combining hiphop-inspired reggae and vice versa. Coincidentally released on the same day as our recent Top 10 Caribbean Hip Hop Pioneers article, this one covers a lot of familiar ground with classics from Das EFX, Capleton, Bobby Konders, Fu-Schnickens, Louie Rankin, BDP, Shinehead and more. Definitely a pick for the hip-hop heads. Stream here, download here.
