Mixtape Mondays: Jillionaire, Jah T Jr, DJ Select

Words by DJ Theory

Jillionaire, mix for Big Chill Presents (via Hipsters Don’t Dance):  Our globe-skating Trinidadian contributor Jillionaire has found himself in London at the moment to drop some tropical knowledge on the Dancehall Jamboree party on the 26th.  These London cats really know how to throw my kind of party, melding dancehall and bashment with soca, tropical bass, UK funky, dub, grime. This one is a more straight dancehall and reggae party and is bound to deliver the goods as it’s curated by the folks from some of London’s finer dancehall nights Hipsters Dont Dance and Physically Fit.  Big Chill Presents and their venue Big Chill House are pretty well recognized for events such as this and the much larger Big Chill festival which this year included Kanye West, Horace Andy, James Blake, Buraka Som Sistema, Spoek Mathambo and tons more.  To get the motors running for the party next week, Jillionaire cooked up a nice little pot of soca and dancehall that should get anybody in the London area properly fired up, and anyone in any other part of the world ready to throw off their shirt and swing it like a towel in their living room.  In addition to the Jilly thing, HDD’s own Kazabon & Hootie Who chefed up a wicked mix on the side with some of the artists on the bill plus some choice dancehall, soca and uptempo bits, and even a remix from this dude.  Definitely worth peeping as well, stream and tracklist here.  Stream and tracklist for Jillionaire mix here.

DJ Select, Bruk Out:  Our boy DJ Select just came with some new heatery, nicely balancing UK, JA and NYC vibes with selections from Vybz Kartel, Donaeo, Toddla T, Busy Signal x Fatman Scoop and Kano, MJ Cole, Maluca–and last not least a tough selection of tunes on Federation Sounds’ Flatlands Remix Project! BRUK OUT MIX VOL. 1 by djselect

Jah T Jr, Lock The Streets: We’ve been coasting thru some different terrain here at Mixtape Mondays, but regardless where we may end up sometimes you know we stay armed and ready with the sure-shot bashment mixes.  Lock The Streets from Philly DJ/producer Jah T, Jr. of Humble Camp is that dancehall mix that’s ready to help you blast through your week and also the stock set of blaupunkt’s in the civic.  This mix, hosted by Quick Cook, covers some necessary ground like the gigantic Overproof Riddim and the dangerous new Back To Basics which boasts a bagga big artists including Bounty and Beenie on the same riddim, which is kind of a big deal considering their longstanding beef.  They each voiced diss tracks toward each other but, hey, it’s a start.  Jah T, Jr. blessed Mixtape Mondays with 2 quality mixes not too long ago, and with more jawns like this popping up I’m sure it won’t be the last.  Download here
