Yesterday I hit the dealership here in Miami (where I’ve recently relocated after a lifetime in New York) to buy a new car… and my salesman turns out to be a Guyanese DJ from BrooklynโEast New York, to be specific. Small world. We naturally start talking soca and, while I’m filling out my paperwork, my boy Wesley shows me a video he just worked on, for “Bacchanalist,” by Trinidad’s Kerwin Du Bois. Shot in MIA, the clip is the first from Du Bois, who co-wrote and produced last year’s Groovy Soca title-winning “Wotless” by Kes the Band and has worked with a who’s who of soca stars including Bunji Garlin, Destra Garcia, Allison Hinds, Blaxx and Machel Montanoโand it’s one of the sharper-looking soca clips you’ll see. Watch it below and look out for the anthemic, infectious “Bacchanalist” (on Precision Productions’ Antilles riddim) to be a major Groovy Soca contender come T&T Carnival time… and stick around for a long time after that, too. Some major crossover potential with this one.
