Words by DJ Theory—
It’s a new week, which means more mixes and vibes coming your way from different corners of the world here on Mixtape Mondays. This week we touch down in Vancouver, NYC, Germany, Austria with some brand new one drop, big duplates, moombahton, and even some throwback hip-hop. Suit up.
Faction Sound Crew, 10 Year Anniversary Mix: Canadian killas Faction Sound Crew just celebrated their 10 year anniversary, and compiled this wicked three-part mix to commemorate the decade of party rocking, numerous quality mixtapes and the diverse tastes of selectors DJ Arems, DJ Tanner, and ’09 addition to the fam, DJ/MC/homie Iron Lyon. The original crew (which also includes MC Trigga and DJ Akshun) was formed in Vancouver, though Iron Lyon is based in NYC by way of MA and Miami, while Tanner just made the pilgrimage from BC to NYC himself about a year ago and is already doing damage in the club circuit. For their 10-year combination mix, each member submitted a completely different vibe, and each murdered it pon sight. Iron Lyon sets if off with Golden Era hip-hop classics. Arems goes in with a full on onslaught of clobbering reggae dubplates, all remixed by the man himself and blended over classic and modern rap instros, and Tanner flexes his affection for moombahton, leading off with none other than my remix for Federation’s Flatlands Remix Project, followed up by a tite selection of various moombah heat. Here’s to another 10 years of punishing clubs and idiot soundbwoys! Download here.
Sensi Movement, The Message: Germany’s Sensi Movement is back with a stellar new roots mix to get things blazing for 2012. Setting the tone with the phenomenal tune from Stephen and Damian Marley, “Tight Ship,” Sensi Movement keep the quality control up with crucial modern one drop from the likes of Luciano, Lutan Fyah, Protoje, Anthony B, Tarrus Riley, I-Octane, Marcia Griffiths, Queen Ifrica, Capleton, Jah Vinci, G Whizz and more. A sureshot of a download for those looking to set the week—and the New Year—off right. Stream below, download here.
Bassrunner Productions, The Dixie Riddim megamix: To promote the drop of their brand new Dixie Riddim, Bassrunner put together a quick mix to hype up the release, mixed by German champion sound Sentinel. The riddim itself is a potent roots blend, combining elements of new and old flavors alike. Produced by Luke Rich, the compilation boasts talents from both JA and EU, including some up and comers and bigger names like Rayvon and Shaggy, the original Red Fox (all three of whom just joined us and the Roots onstage at the Okayplayer Holiday Jam) and LargeUp fam Natalie Storm. Stream the mix below, purchase the album on iTunes here.
