Fashion Fridays: Suriname’s Atelier Doré

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Caribbean Collections, a new showcase for Caribbean designers at London Fashion Week, made its debut last month, giving selected designers from across the region the opportunity to showcase for discerning London buyers and press. Among the most talked about exhibitors at the well-received showcase, which also included Trinidad’s Meiling and Haitian handbag designer Phelecia Dell, was a less familiar name from a country somewhat less known for its style: Suriname jeweller Atelier Doré.

The company’s history dates back to 1955: Founder Doremus Hendrik Uiterloo, better known as Doré, once designed ceremonial gifts for President Eisenhouwer and Great Britain’s “Queen Mum.” Uiterloo’s son Henk and his wife renamed the company Atelier Doré in 1996, specializing in handmade, primarily silver jewelry. Self-billed as “jewelry from another world,” Atelier Doré definitely has its own distinctive aesthetic, as you can clearly see here. Check out some more designs over at their website.
