Words by Jesse Serwer
Gyptian was among the artists who contributed to VP Records’ We Remember Gregory Isaacs compilation last year, offering a suitably smooth cover of the Cool Ruler’s classic “My Number One.” This unexpected video for the tune finds Gyptian serenading a beachside bonfire, striking a very Greg’ry-esque figure in hat, slightly unbuttoned shirt and sunglasses. Some might call this sort of thing impersonation, but Gyptian’s evocation of the unique and distinctive Mr. Isaacs is so effortless that “conjuring” seems like a more appropriate word.
