You Rate It: Nicki Minaj x Beenie Man, “Gun Shot”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Here at LargeUp we try to carefully curate all of our musical selections so you don’t have to. There’s plenty of other sites where you can sift through all the junk that gets thrown onto the Internet on a daily basis. But every now and then something drops that’s just too notable to ignore even if it’s not exactly our cup of tea. Such is the case with Nicki Minaj’s “Gun Shot” featuring Beenie Man.

Nicki has repped the Caribbean in various ways before but until “Gun Shot” we’d never heard the Trinidad native feature a dancehall artist on one of her tracks. The Beenie Man-guested tune is the second to last of 19 songs on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which leaked Wednesday in advance of its release on Tues. (April 3), and it’s pretty much the opposite of what you’d expect these two to be up to together, let alone on a track called “Gun Shot.” Even with the gunshot effects, Beenie’s “zagga”s and Nicki’s patois, it’s pretty much as poppy as it gets, more like a sequel to Nicki and Rihanna’s “Fly” then the dancehall vibes we were anticipating. Let us know how you’re feeling about Nicki and Beenie’s collaboration in the comments section—and check our Toppa Top 10 list of Caribbean artists we think Nicki should collab with, from way back in 2010.
