Mixtape Mondays: Glen Washington x Green Lion, BASSFoundation, Livity Movements

Words by DJ Theory—

As much as we rate dancehall in the summer, roots and foundation music surely compliment a blazing summer day like no other. This week at Mixtape Mondays we have theree tapes of primarily one drop and lover’s rock reggae, with a world premier from a seasoned artist, vinyl selections from New Delhi, and modern roots from Brooklyn. Grab a ting or an extra stout and cool off.

LargeUp Exclusive Premier: Glen Washington x Green Lion, Masterpiece Album Sampler:  New England/St. Croix’s Green Lion Crew are back at the DJ controls to promote the latest full length from veteran JA singer Glen Washington, and shared with us the exclusive preview of the album blended up courtesy of GLC’s Zeke Stern. Having regularly worked with many of the top producers in reggae over the years including Coxsone Dodd and Phillip Frasier, Washington still smoothly rides one drop and lovers riddims with love, soul, and conscious lyrics. The upcoming Masterpiece album is produced in signature style by our folks at Zion High Productions, presented as well by the Lustre Kings and 45 Shootout camps.  If you’re a fan of contemporary roots music with a classic feel this album is a go for sure.  Purchase/pre-order Masterpiece on iTunes here, stream and download the mix below. More info and tracklist here.

BASSFoundationRoots, I Can’t Stand It: Touching on a new artist and region for MM this week is New Delhi’s Delhi Sultanate. As a member of Word Sound Power, The Skavengers, and BASSFoundation, Dehli has his hands full, and covers a heap of genres amongst the three projects. His BASSFoundation crew normally rinses dubstep and jungle via their mixes and regular parties in India, but for this Delhi taps into the roots of the sound with a strictly vinyl mix of foundation, classic and some modern roots, culture and dancehall riddim selections. What’s also notable is how the same riddims are compiled from different versions and producers over the years, in somewhat of an “original sample” style. Always dig a little digging when it comes to mixes, especially when you’re going all wax. Kudos.  Stream and download below, tracklist here.

Livity Movements, Singers Selection 11.5: NYC mixtape and podcast machine Dev Kutta has a new one up for the people, showcasing your favorite singers on this edition. Leading off with the fitting and undeniable single “Reggae Music Again” from Busy Signal, Dev moves right into big one drop and lovers cuts from Romain Virgo, I-Octane, Jr Gong, Beres, Tarrus, Chris Martin, Jah Cure, Assassin and more. Summertime reggae music, straight. Stream and download here.
