You Rate It: Kgnston feat. Beenie Man, “5 Cent”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

You never know who you’ll run into at the mall in Kingston— perhaps Kingston herself. Wait, we mean Kgnston. LargeUp was getting a meal at the food court in the Sovereign Mall in Liguanea when we had the pleasant surprise of bumping into beautiful model Jacqui Edwards at the food court. Jacqui told us she’s been recording music under the name Kgnston (yes, no ‘i’) and showed us her new, Mykal Cushnie-directed video for “5 Cent,” her catchy island pop version of Colin Lucas’ “Dollar Wine.” The slick video starts on the Kingston waterfront, showcasing local BMX riders, before moving to a warehouse party downtown. Musically, “5 Cent” is closer to Europe than Jamaica but Beenie’s involvement and the classic “Dollar Wine” hook gives it the necessary Caribbean vibes. Watch below, and tell us what you think.
