Words by DJ Theory —
Welcome back to another stacked edition of Mixtape Mondays. Big vibes from the UK, Germany, NYC, Jamaica, and even a quick ting from yours truly add the pepper this week. Serve yourself below.
The Large, Fresh Fruits: Our girl The Large of the Shimmy Shimmy and Hipsters Don’t Dance crews just laced us with a new mix of loud tropical vibes. Bringing the business via the steady flow of mixtapes, blog posts and club nights, her London teams stay doing damage and are always on the toppa top of reggae, dancehall, African and Caribbean culture in all corners. For this one she touches on a mixed bag of tunes that she — and we — love, with a fresh cover from Robin Clare as well. Perfect start to the week. Stream and download below, tracklist here.
So Shifty, Mixpak Pressure Vol. 2 Promo Mix: The So Shifty boys are back again, this time teaming up with our folks at Mixpak to promo their newest effort in the dancehall arena. Mixpak Pressure Vol. 2 is a forward-thinking compilation of strictly instrumental riddims, enlisting a group of producers from across the globe all bringing something original to the table in one like-minded project. So Shifty — whose Darkas Riddim is easily one of my top picks from the pack — blend the whole ting together for your listening ease, with a few extra bits in there from Mixpak affiliates Poirier and more. Get hip to this if you haven’t already and vibe out. Purchase Mixpak Pressure Vol. 2 here, stream and download the mix below, tracklist here.
Toddla T x Deejay Theory, The Toddla T Show – Evolution Week 7: Whoa gosh … the big man Toddla T recently recruited yours truly for a guest mix on his weekly show for Evolution on iHeartRadio. Teezy always brings the heat with the show, rinsing just about everything he’s feeling at the moment wrapped up into one seamless hour. Toddla warms things up the first half hour before a humbling introduction into a post-SXSW set from this guy. I made the mix in my homeboy Orion’s kitchen while still in Austin, but hopefully you enjoy some of the vibes I was rocking all around town mixed with whatever else came to mind from past and present. Stream the full show below, 30 minute Deejay Theory set w/ download below that. Tracklist here.
I-Octane, Thankful Part 2: For his latest mixtape, conscious dancehall juggernaut I-Octane hooked up with dancehall journalism OG/LargeUp friend Rob Kenner’s Boomshots website. Essentially a compilation of Octane’s recent singles, the mix features big tunes like”Love Di Vibes” and “Gal Gimme Bun” and a few brand-new ones we’ve never heard before like the DJ Smurf-produced “Education.” Download (and tracklist) via Boomshots here.
Max Glazer, Dancehall Party: Honorable mention for longtime bredren Max Glazer from NYC/Philly/Jamaica’s Federation Sound. No, you can’t download this one here: Max’s latest mix CD of modern dancehall and bashment essentials comes strictly in physical format, so you’ll need to make your way to Manhattan and visit our friends at Miss Lily’s Variety to get your hands on a copy. There’s a good chance you’ll also be able to catch Max, DJ Select or our own DJ Gravy broadcasting live in the place from their regular post at Radio Lily. 130 W. Houston is the spot.
