LargeUp Recommends: 15 People To Follow on Instagram

Words by LargeUp Crew—

Like a lot of folks, we’ve been spending more and more time on Instagram lately. Besides for regularly updating our own feed (Follow us @Largeupdotcom) with exclusive photos from our travels, we’ve also noticed more and more quality feeds pertaining to Caribbean music and culture. Here are a few of our favorite personalities on Instagram, and a few reasons why you should follow them, too.

Collie Buddz (@RealCollieBuddz)

The accessible Bermudan reggae star’s fans are just as much the stars of his Instagram page (which formerly used the handle @YeahYaKnow) as he is. And on the rare occasions that Collie is at home in Bermuda, he makes for a pretty decent tour guide for his home island.

Nigel Wilmot (@Wilmotorsports)

When it comes to off-road motorsports in Jamaica, Nigel Wilmot is boss. Whether he’s tackling the hills on his motorbike, ATV or (most often) his tricked out Suzuki Samurai, the nephew of singer Billy Wilmot and cousin of surfing champs Icah and Imani Wilmot diligently documents his offroading adventures through yard via his Instagram.

Alison Hinds (@AlisonHinds)

Soca isn’t on Instagram too heavy yet, but Barbados’ Alison Hinds is doing a good job of representing with her prolific feed. When she’s not regaling us with up-to-di-time pics of her perfectly preserved body, she’s taking us back with throwback photos from her childhood, her days with the Stage One band and early career highlights.

Va$htie Kola (@Vashtie)

Downtown NY’s Trini it-girl doesn’t post much Caribbean-themed content to her Instagram, but she is everywhere else you want to be, and does a good job documenting it.

Don Corleon (@DonCorleonie)

Not just a renowned reggae and dancehall producer, Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett is quite the skilled chef. Besides for updating his fans on his studio runnings, Don uses his Instagram account to flex photos of grilled mahi mahi and jerk tamarind tofu, among other specialties.

Gappy Ranks (@GappyRanks)

U.K. reggae singer Gappy Ranks stays on the road and loves his weed; that translates to an Instagram page showcasing ganja strains from around the world.

Varun Baker (@VarunBaker)

Looking for some great photography from around Jamaica? And some Brazil, too? Look no further than Brazil-born, Jamaica-based photographer Varun Baker, whose work covers everything from Jamaican cooking to cultural events and JA’s natural wonders. (He’s also shot and written for LargeUp) For more great photography from yard—and wherever else his work takes him—see the feed of our own creative director/chief photographer/JA representative Martei Korley.

Jillionaire (@JillionaireSucks)

If you follow Jillionaire on Twitter or have read his contributions to LargeUp, you know Major Lazer’s Trini representative has quite an irreverent sense of humor. His Instagram sets that irreverence to pictures, of everything from doubles shops in Ontario to his many friends with afros. In fact, as a unit the whole Major Lazer crew has an engaging Instagram game—see also @Diplo, @WalshyFire and @MelaMurder.

Usain Bolt (@UsainBolt)

‘Cause, if you were Usain Bolt, your Instagram feed would be filled with awesome stuff all of the time, too.

Mr. Lexx (@DagDiggy

For a dancehall artist, Mr. Lexx does not take himself very seriously, which is immediately apparent on his very active, diary-like Instagram (His personal caption: “Dem act like dem rate me.. So mi act like me believe dem.” If he’s not hamming it up for the camera, he’s pushing the limits with his commentary.

Beenie Man (@KingBeenieMan) and Shaggy (@DiRealShaggy)

OK, the King of Dancehall and Mr. Boombastic are both new to Instagram, and just getting the hang of it. Welcome them.

Hollie Cook (@HollieCookie)

Are you as in love with our 2011 Best New Artist/Rookie of the Year Hollie Cook as we are? Then her bubbly/girly/goofy Instagram will have you loving her even more.

The Blackout Twins (@BintaBlackout/@VendelaBlackout/@BlackoutFamily)

It’s not easy to keep up with this duo of dancehall choreographers. Though Vendela and Binta Blackout (aka the “Blackout Twinz”) are from Sweden, where they can be found dancing at seemingly every major dancehall event that comes through the country (that’s Binta above, in costume at Tommy Lee Sparta’s recent Sweden show), they spend nuff time in JA, too, ensuring that all of their movements are up to di time. Keep up with them on their own individual accounts, or collectively at @BlackoutFamily.
