Mixtape Mondays: Jesse Royal, So Shifty, Oliver Knight

Words by Deejay Theory —

It’s a holiday! Here in San Francisco we’re fresh off two days of liming in the streets for our yearly Carnival in the Mission District. I had the pleasure of DJ’ing this year and am still recovering as we speak… But now a new week is ahead of us and, of course, there’s new mixtapes to share to set the soundtrack for your holiday BBQ, backyard party, taco fiesta, driveway fireworks display, etc. Pull up a chair and grab a plate below…

Jesse Royal, In Comes The Small Axe: Steadily bussing JA yute Jesse Royal just shared his anticipated sophomore mixtape with the people, the rightfully dubbed In Comes The Small Axe. Undiluted roots music from a name you’ll likely become much more in tune with in the years to come. Get familiar with over 20 tracks of new original material blent up by DJ Tall Up. Build the vibe right with this one. Stream below, download here.

So Shifty, Strictly Riddims #10: Chaaa… sit back and twist one to this by the pool or just about anywhere …. heavyweight dubs and instrumentals selected by the German homies So Shifty and delivered by our folks over the lake at Hipsters Don’t Dance. This is pretty much exactly what I would select for this mix series — b sides, dubs and versions of essential riddims from the non-MP3 vaults. Java, Cuss Cuss, Stalag, Golden Hen, Heavenless, Queen Majesty, Truths & Rights, Baltimore, just skimming the surface considering they finessed over 50 riddims in 20 minutes—and nothing later than the 1980’s. Might need to run this one backa couple times. Stream below, download here.

Oliver Night, Tropical’ish: Stumbled on this mix via the homie Jillionaire. It’s definitely in order to cap off this week with some tropical party music, this round courtesy of Britain’s Oliver Night. I also couldn’t help but notice a familiar remix form this guy early out, and was then drawn in to a solid collage of holiday raving vibes. If you’re looking to party in the streets, your backyard, your neighbor’s backyard because they’re out of town, whatever, throw this one on. 1.5 hours of straight cha cha cha. Stream and download below.
