Soldia Sound for No Ice Cream Sound Issue #4: Shout out to our folks in London at Shimmy Shimmy for always pushing the thing forward. The fourth edition of their dancehall zine No Ice Cream Sound puts the spotlight on NYC with exclusive interviews with Shaggy, Dre Skull, Clive Chin and Rayvon, art from Smutlee and even a roundup from our own Jesse Serwer on some of the best Caribbean eateries in the city. This custom mix from Switzerland’s Soldia Sound accompanies the visuals by bringing things back to Brooklyn in the 90’s—back when summertime meant the hydrants were cracked and the sounds of Super Cat, Mega Banton, Bounty Killer, ATCQ and Mad Lion flooded the streets. Jubilee, OC Mixtape #36: Known bad gal Jubilee just laced up Opening Ceremony with a mixtape inspired by/featuring Bad Gal RiRi and, frankly, we support that. Jubilee does her thing as always, going in on Rihanna singles new and old with remixes in the reggaeton, dancehall, soca, Jersey club and bass arena as we’d only expect from this one. Riddim Wise, Universal Message: Rounding out this week, we’ve got some upful conscious vibes courtesy of Montreal-based selecta/producer Riddim Wise. A combination of new tunes and recent favorites here from the heart of the new roots and culture movement that’s resonating throughout the world right now, of which Riddim Wise is definitely taking note. As with their other mixes, the iTunes purchase links are laid out for you as well so if you’re feeling a tune—and too lazy to search—it’s still easy to support the ting. Federation Sound, Federation Invasion #300: Honorable mention this week goes out to our comrades at Federation Sound, who just marked the 300th installment of their very necessary podcast. While juggling (literally) four radio shows, the homies Max Glazer and Kenny Meez always find time to squeeze off punishing podcasts every week for the people. I feel like we just covered their 250th show, but, when you do the math, it adds up to, guess what, one year! This one is strictly Federation dubplates, many built specifically for the RBMA Culture Clash a few weeks back, leading off with Gappy Ranks calling out and killing each competitor one by one.
