Words by Emily Shapiro—
If you don’t know Blacka di Danca, it’s about time you did. Not only is he a touring dancer with New Kingston and Collie Buddz, but a young, talented and incredibly positive dude who brings fiyah to any dance floor he touches.
Blacka, who has roots in Trinidad, has been on the dance scene in New York for years now, and has made a name for himself internationally by touring countries like Russia, France, Italy and England as an instructor. He’ll be bringing his skills on the road again in Europe and the US later this year, with LargeUp as a media sponsor. So stay tuned for info on that. His personal style is unique and he always takes time to educate his students on the roots of dancehall, paying homage to other crews and dancers who have paved the way.
And look out for Blacka in the upcoming video for Busta Rhymes’ new song “Twerk It” featuring Pharell and Nicki Minaj, which just wrapped. He’s also about to release his We Dance Reggae dancehall workout DVD. You can get updates on his classes and videos at www.wedancereggae.com so make sure to check it out.
Blacka’s given us an exclusive look at his latest choreography to Popcaan’s “The System.” He busts some original moves, some old school dances like the “Blaze” and the “Crab Up, Crab Up” as well as some newer favorites by fellow dancers like Black Eagles and Camron One-Shot.
If you’re in the New York area and interested in picking up a few steps, Blacka is bringing some international talents to town next week to collaborate on some workshops. On Thurs. June 13 he’ll be joined at DANY Studios by Andrey Boyko from Russia, and the following day, Friday 14, he’s bringing out Kye Kye from the dope crew, Ghetto Legacy. We love to see dancers supporting each other and sharing their craft. Check the flyers below for details.
