We’re back at it here at Mixtape Mondays. Summer is in full swing and so are the mixes, with a nice roundup of vibes this week courtesy of Jamaica, California and Germany. Plan a spontaneous road trip, and throw these on…
Protoje x Yaadcore, Music From My Heart: Lighting up this week with a brand new mixtape live and direct from Kingston is one of the strongest forces in the roots reggae revival— the team of Protoje and selector Yaadcore. Music From My Heart speaks directly to Protoje and Yaadcore’s fans, who have come to expect nothing less than pure reggae music void of slackness and full of life from the duo. This tape is 100% Protoje material and features, so if you’re still unfamiliar with the artist, this would be a strong introduction to what this camp is all about. If you’re in Cali he’ll also be performing with his full band Indiggnation at Sierra Nevada World Music Festival next weekend ‘longside Damian and Stephen Marley, U Roy, Gappy Ranks and many more. LargeUp Premiere: Deejay Theory, Northern Nights Mix: It’s definitely festival season and we’re holding a new summertime mix blasting off as we speak from this guy to hype up the Northern Nights Music Festival July 19-21 on the Humboldt/ Mendocino border in Northern California. There’s a heap of different ingredients here with an emphasis on dancehall, bits of moombahton, hip hop, original edits and various electronic elements that will soon echo through the redwoods and mountains along the Eel River (previous home of Reggae On The River). I’m looking forward to performing at the festival along with talented homies and artists like Los Rakas, Sabo, Uproot Andy, Oro 11, Peligrosa, Dirtybird, Silent Frisco, Minnesota, Kastle and more. With over an hour of music, this vibey mix barely scratches the surface on what to expect at the event and hopefully treats you right this summer in a variety of settings. Hope to see some of you on the river! Tickets available here. Stream and download below, tracklist here.
SoulForce, Stereo DJ Mixtape 2: This one is a heavy new mix from Spanish-German squad SoulForce covering a grip of their original remixes, edits and exclusives. With side production projects and DJ bootlegs stacking up, producer Fizzle is taking dancehall music to the club, bending and twisting it in different directions for the dance. SoulForce has also been working heavily with BK rapper BRNGTN churning out bangers like this one (which gets heavy rotation in my sets), and hooking up moombahton-meets dancehall remixes under the LiedersOfTheNewSchool umbrella, with flips of tracks by Prince Zimboo, Tommy Lee and a take on Dre Skull’s infectious Kling Klang riddim. All that turns up on this mix (and some Action Bronson reggae blends I’m not mad at) to get some party flow in your week. Definitely workout or pre-game ready.
