How does one celebrate the life of a counter-culture connoisseur such as Jean-François Bizot, founder of France’s Radio Nova and Actuel magazine? Why not invite his son Julian down to Jamaica for a chic beach party held in his late father’s honor? That is what music business legend and GoldenEye Hotel & Resort proprietor Chris Blackwell (in association with Radio Nova) did last Saturday. The LargeUp team journeyed to the beautiful property in Oracabessa, St Mary, for the aptly titled ‘It’s A Bizot Party!’
Picture it… the sweeping sunset vista, waves gently lapping at the shoreline in the distance while musicians tune their instruments beneath driftwood lights in preparation for the show. Fabulously styled and contrastingly relaxed patrons sipping away at the dangerously addictive Blackwell Rum-infused coconuts… the scent of sweet high grade wafting through the air. The initial ‘boom’ as the beach bonfire was ignited. Let’s not forget the food, an amalgam of authentic Jamaican and European tastes and techniques for meat lovers and vegetarians alike, catered by the hotel’s talented chefs (two thumbs up for the mac and cheese and the curried goat dumplings). The initial shower of rain dampened not our spirits and the vibe was high from the outset, though the pulsating sounds from Tyrant Sound System helped to heighten the energy even more.
It’s A Bizot Party! afforded patrons an all-inclusive party experience broadcasted live by Radio Nova, complete with electrifying performances by dub poets No-Maddz, and reggae artistes Chronixx and Kelissa McDonald accompanied by Zinc Fence Band. The vibe was perfect—full of energy, quality entertainment and people ‘fulljoying’ the moment. Blackwell himself had a blast, citing Chronixx and Kelissa as ‘superstars in the making,’ noting that he specifically enjoyed the No-Maddz’s performance, which he found ‘explosive.’
We’re sure the late Mr. Bizot would have been beyond pleased. Click here to start scrolling through Martei Korley’s photo gallery from the event.
