Kobo Town’s Jumbie in the Jukebox is easily one of our favorite albums of the year so far. With its mixture of vintage calypso and indie rock sensibilities, it’s Diaspora music at its finest, presenting a classic Caribbean style in a new light—not unlike Harry Belafonte 50 years ago. The group (vocalist Drew Gonsalves and assorted crew) are currently on tour in support of the album (which was recorded between Montreal, Trinidad, Belize and Toronto) and, this Wednesday night, they’ll make their New York City debut at SOBs.
