Every joke in last night’s episode of The Simpsons was on point. The storyline was by the book: Bart the original prankster had to curb his mischievous habits so he can attend a class trip; meanwhile, Krusty the Clown, who is facing bankruptcy, licenses his character to foreign actors so he can profit from their remade versions of his show.
Krusty’s Mr. Me Too’s span the globe: Ireland, Romania— and even Jamaica! Jamaican Krusty’s patois commentary referenced Musical Youth’s “Pass the Dutchie” and Johnny Clarke’s “Wante Wante Can’t Get It.” Then the kicker was the “Itchem & Scratchem Blow,” which played up the ganja smoking stereotype of Jamaicans to no surprise, but in a way that was actually funny. When the credits rolled, the Itchem and Scratchem Show dub version made an encore (pull up!), followed by The Simpsons theme over steel drums. It’s hardly the first time that The Simpsons has referenced Jamaican culture: founder Matt Groening, an avowed reggae fanatic, even named the show’s Dr. Hibbert after Toots.
