Words by LargeUp Crew—
Blacka Di Danca has been all over the world in the last few months, most recently on a tour through Europe which included a spell on the road with Major Lazer. Now, LargeUp’s global dancehall ambassador is back home in NYC, where he’s reconvening with Jessica Phoenix and Yaminah Legohn—the trio of dancers recently came together to choreograph Fiyah! Dancehall Theater — for a dance workshop at Brooklyn’s Cumbe Center for African and Diaspora Dance.
A cost of $18 (in advance, $20 at the door) gets you three hours of wining and sweating with three of the dancehall world’s most accomplished and renowned instructors (and music from DJ Yanks). Who knows, after the class—which is this Sunday, Dec. 15 from 3-6—you might just find yourself bogle-ing your way into Blacka, Jessica and Yaminah’s next dancehall stage production.
While the “Triple Threat Workshop” is a one-time thing (for now), there’s plenty of other opportunities to get your footwork bashment ready at Cumbe. LargeUp friend and Fela dancer) Shakira Marshall teaches Afro-Soca on Sundays from 3:00 – 4:30pm, while the aforementioned Yaminah Legohn teaches dancehall/reggae on Sundays from 4:30-6:00pm and Afro Karibé on Thursdays from 7:30-9:00pm.
