Sons of Dub brought the heartical vibes to Monday night’s Okayplayer Holiday Jam. Addis Pablo, son of Augustus Pablo, joined The Roots on stage during the LargeUp-produced “reggae” section of the annual jam session for a performance of Addis’ father Augustus Pablo’s classic “King Tubby’s Meets Rockers Uptown.” First released by the elder Pablo in 1976, the tune was the first dub track to gain popularity outside of Jamaica and to place on international charts. Onstage Monday night Addis was joined by Jah Bami, a colleague of his in the crew Suns of Dub, producing their own version of the mellowed track with James Poyser, Captain Kirk . Watch the performance here, and check out more coverage of the event here.
It was a busy week for Addis and Suns of Dub. In addition to their Holiday Jam performance, Suns of Dub also dropped a mixtape with Major Lazer/Walshy Fire and LargeUp featuring more than 30 tracks (download it here). We also launched his Meditations Pt. 2 video with Jesse Royal, shot in the hills outside of Kingston, Jamaica, by LargeUp/Raw Tings crew Tony Lowe and Taliesin Gilkes-Bower. Addis wrapped up things up with an appearance on the LargeUp Sessions where he added his melodica playing to an epic freestyle session by Bunji Garlin and Jah Bami, flatlining everyone inside Miss Lily’s. Look out for audio and photos from the session on LargeUp shortly. But first…”King Tubby’s Meets Rockers Uptown” live with the Roots!
