Trinidad’s soca power couple are doing their best to get us hyped for Carnival 2014 – first, we had Bunji Garlin’s Major Lazer and Kubiyashi track “It’s a Carnival,” and now Fay-Ann Lyons is dropping “Catch Me,” a soca-rock-EDM banger.
The track was produced by New York’s Richie Beretta, who brings his own interpretation of soca, complete with big drops, heavy guitars, and (of course) Lyons’s soaring vocals. Like Major Lazer, he is not a producer normally associated with major soca artists — if this trend continues, it looks like soca crossover songs might just be some of this Carnival’s biggest hits.
Lyons, whose annual carnival jams are always popular, has been on the road supporting her husband Bunji as his hit song “Differentology” has become an international phenomenon. In fact, she joined him as he performed the 2013 Carnival smash alongside the Roots during the LargeUp segment of the Okayplayer Holiday Jam — check out the performance here. While you can’t see Fay Ann’s lovely visage in the clip (she was offstage), it’s hard to miss her soaring vocals in the mix.
