LargeUp TV: Wyclef Talks Sting, Dancehall + Dubplates

Words by Jesse Serwer:::Video Shot by Allison Swank:::Edited by Kieran Meadows

If you’ve followed Wyclef since his start with the Fugees, you know ‘Clef isn’t just a fan of dancehall, he’s a proper student of the culture. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with the Refugee Camp Sound president for a wide-ranging conversation on all things dancehall and Jamaica, ahead of his upcoming appearance at the 30th anniversary edition of the world’s greatest dancehall show, Sting.

‘Clef told us about the Stone Love tape that served as his introduction to reggae as a kid growing up in Brooklyn’s Marlboro projects, what he’s looking forward to most at Sting, his favorite all-time clashes, and his new favorite artist, Chronixx. He also answers the question dancehall fanatics have been asking for years: Was the Michael Jackson dubplate at Fully Loaded really real?

Watch the video below for his answer, watch clef break down the Haitian holiday phenomenon that is cremas here, look out for our Greatest Sting Moments countdown tomorrow on LargeUp.com and make sure to catch ‘Clef’s performance live online or Pay-Per-View, if you’re not already on your way to JamWorld in Portmore yourself, that is.
