It seems like everyone in reggae is going back to the foundation. In 2012 it was Mr. Vegas and Busy Signal, with their respective Sweet Jamaica and Reggae Music Again LPs. Last year it was Shaggy, and Out of Many, One Music. This year, Tarrus Riley is leading the movement back to reggae basics with Love Movement, an album which delves deep into the roots and rocksteady eras.
One of our favorite tunes on the LP, an early frontrunner for Caribbean album of the year since dropping on Tuesday, is this notable pairing with rapper Mr. Cheeks (of Lost Boyz, and “Lights Camera Action” fame) and foundation deejay Big Youth. From the whistle melody to Cheeks’ verse and backing vocals that sound a lot like Beres Hammond(?), everything about “Five Days” just works. Stream it here:
