Gyptian is, arguably, reggae’s reigning king of the gyal tune. “Serious Times” announced him as a culture artist a decade ago, but he’s been singing to the ladies ever since, from the ubiquitous “Hold You” to his latest collaboration with Ricky Blaze called “Stuck.”
Naturally, Gyptian has some new heat for his female fans on Valentine’s Day. A synthesizer-driven cut from NY-based team Rugged & Prez and Fire Peter, “Let You Go” occupies that sweet spot between pop, R&B and dancehall that’s been Gyptian’s home since “Hold You.” But “Let You Go” isn’t your typical love song (and definitely don’t confuse it with 2010’s “Nah Let Go”).
Gyptian finds himself torn on the track, singing “I want you to be my lover for a lifetime” while expressing his misgivings with a skeptical Whoaahhh. The video, directed by KeonVybz and co-starring female lead D’Andra Williams, offers some resolution to Gyptian’s existential crisis in the form of a surprise ending.
