Words by Jesse Serwer—
At the top of the year, we told you how Notice, the production duo of Wayne “Unga Barunga” Thompson and Jason Welsch, were stepping out from behind the scenes and positioning themselves as a producer/group a la Major Lazer.
With a slightly varied spelling—notice it’s now Notis, not Notice—they’ve released a new collaboration with the underrated reggae vocalist Iba Mahr. Sure to get forwards wherever traditional reggae values are upheld, the track is a tribute to tried-and-true Jamaican fashion staples—“diamond” (argyle) socks, Wallabee Clarks, mesh marinas—and consistency in general (“Old fashioned dem ah call mi,” Iba quips… “but mi inna jah jah army”).
All of the right elements are in place for this one to really bubble: there’s the classic, Greensleeves-style artwork, and an upcoming video directed by Jay Will. Stream “Diamond Sox” below, and tell us what you think in the comments.
