Words by LargeUp Crew—
Federation Sound has been at the forefront of pushing dancehall forward since 1999, when Max Glazer and Kenny Meez started the DJ crew with their good friend Cipha Sounds. Cipha eventually moved on, but Kenny and Max grew Federation into one of the most creative sounds in the business, bringing Fame FM’s Alric & Boyd and the late Disco D into a network simultaneously representing New York, Philadelphia and Jamaica. Max and Kenny have made plenty of moves in their own right over the years, but Federation has always been at the core of what they do as reggae/dancehall DJs, with projects like their reliable mixtape series (including official/commissioned titles for the likes of Vybz Kartel, Aidonia, Wayne Marshall and TOK), the weekly Brand New Machine party in NYC, and events across the U.S., Caribbean and Europe.
True to form, the crew is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a series of massive parties, starting with Miami on May 22. LargeUp and Federation being long-time bredren we’re partnering with them to present the event, which will also feature sounds from the Rice and Peas crew (of which Max is also a member) and Eccentrix Sound, and performances from special guests to be announced. It all goes down at Blackbird Ordinary (site of LargeUp’s 2013 Winter Music Massive) in downtown Miami, the Thursday before Best of the Best/Memorial Day weekend, so if you’re headed down to the 305 for the festivities that week, consider this your kickoff party. And if you weren’t planning to head down this year, you may want to reconsider: we’re definitely going to be bringing a different vibe.
