Words by Jesse Serwer—
Way before he was the “Yeah-yeah!” and “What!?!” guy, Lil Jon got his start making hip-hop remixes of reggae songs, most notably Capleton’s “Tour” and “Wings of the Morning,” in the mid ’90s. Now, decades and another genre switch later, things have come full circle: Jon and DJ Snake’s ubiquitous EDM smash “Turn Down For What” has spawned a dancehall remix featuring a top selection of current Jamaican artists, in Chi Ching Ching, Assassin and Konshens.
If we’re giving credit where credit is due, we’ve got to LargeUp our family, “Silent Addy” of Eccentrix Sound, whose original dancehall flip of “Turn Down For What” with Chi Ching Ching caught Jon’s attention, inspiring this official remix. Additional verses were added from Assassin and Konshens, and voila…”Turn Down For What” tun up!
Speaking of Ching and Eccentrix, they’ll be our guests on the LargeUp Sessions this Thursday at 6pm EST. Stream the “Turn Down For What (Dancehall remix)” below.
