Words by Saxon Baird—
Kabaka Pyramid has dropped some spectacular new visuals for his tune “Never Gonna Be a Slave.” Directed by Norway’s Erik Christian King, the strikingly colorful video intersperses aerial shots of Kingston with clips of the roots artist dropping energetic verses on the streets and atop the iconic Office Centre Building, near the capital’s waterfront. Over the Cane River riddim from the prolific DJ Frass, the tune also spotlights the good things we’ve come to expect from the lyrically-gifted Pyramid, who chants down “Babylon” here with his silver-tongued flow.
While fellow reggae revivalist Chronixx has been grabbing much of the attention over the last year or so, Pyramid has been a major player in the new reggae movement coming out of Jamaica since the release of his 2011 EP Rebel Music EP, a release that arguably kickstarted the whole thing. Now with a new full-length reportedly set to drop in 2014, Pyramid is definitely one to watch this year.
