LargeUp Premiere: The Red, Gold & Green Machine — “The Look Of Love”

Words by Natalie Weiner—

L.A.-based group The Red, Gold & Green Machine describe themselves as “Native Tongues meets Parliament-Funkadelic at a neighborhood party in Jamaica,” which could go down in history as one of the greatest self-described sounds ever. Fortunately, they live up to the hype with their new single “The Look Of Love,” a reggae/hip-hop/R&B groove with some Salaam Remi-esque soulful production from Selecta Kram. Featuring LA underground rap staple Dr. Oop alongside singer Tonye “Magic T” Aganaba, the single is the first release off of the group’s upcoming album Planet Africa, out June 9.

The sound is a little old school, but the kind of old school that’s pretty much impossible to get sick of—a solid one-drop rhythm behind classic R&B vocals. The video follows suit—a laid back, party vibe that could have been filmed in 1994 or yesterday, with only slight changes in style. “You smoke, I toke, you sway, I sing” pretty much sums it up—and we think you’ll be glad to sway along anytime. Check out the video below, and let us know what you think.
