Selector’s Choice: Walshy Fire

Welcome back for the first time to our new column “Selector’s Choice,” a bi-monthly look inside what your favorite DJs and selectors are holding in their record bags and hard drives right now. Deejay Theory set things off with our inaugural column last month, and this week we’ve got longtime LargeUp family member Walshy Fire checking in with a dancehall-centric set from the road.

Yo, this is Walshy Fire. I finally got some downtime in between all these solo tour shows, and working on some new dancehall/afrobeat riddims I’ll be sharing soon, so I had to check in with my LargeUp family and share my picks for what I think are the hottest tunes right now.

Dej Loaf, “Try Me”

This is just the hardest song out right now. A little girl with a baby voice putting a gun to your stomach, Dej Loaf sounds like a hip-hop Sister Nancy. You just cant beat a whole club of people yelling “Imma kill you whole fuckin foamlyyy…”!

Alkaline, “Young People Time Now”

Hate Alkaline or love him, him is a bad artist and this song is one of him baddest. The chorus is the most infectious thing I’ve heard in a long time, backed by a dope beat. This drop, and its instant vibes.

Chi Ching Ching, “Way Up Stay Up”

A one newwww dance come back again!  At least Ching big up Beenie Man first for taking the hook of his song “World Dance.” This is the easiest dance out—it’s definitely gonna run the summer as far as dancers are concerned.

Vybz Kartel, “Miami Vice Episode”

No doubt the biggest forward you can get in a dance right now. Dancehall’s king stays on top.

Popcaan, “Where We Come From”

What started as just a track from Popcaan’s album has taken a life of its own, as the whole album has. This single jumped out immediately to anyone who has the album, and is now getting big forwards at the club, too.
