Selector’s Choice: Yaadcore (Dubwise Jamaica, Indiggnation)

This week in the Selector’s Choice booth we have one of the top young reggae selectors in Jamaica, and a key player in the so-called reggae revival movement of the last several years, Yaadcore. We asked the Indiggnation family DJ and Jamaican radio personality to introduce himself and share some of his favorite current selections, all of which you can hear on his latest Reggae Aroma mixtape, which premiered right here on this week’s #MixtapeMondays. Blessed greetings to you, in the mighty and powerful name of H.I.M Emperor Haile Selassie I Of Ethiopia. I go by the name of Yaadcore, a roots reggae selector from Jamaica delivering conscious and uplifting musical vibration to Jah children worldwide. I’m also the personal DJ for reggae artist Protoje, resident selector for Wednesday night meditation Dubwise Jamaica, and a DJ on Jamaica’s Hot 102 FM, every Thursday night from 12:30 to 2:30 am.

I just released the fourth mixtape from my Reggae Aroma mix series—the We Are Massiv. Edition.  We Are Massiv, a clothing brand based in California, linked up for a musical collab, and I decided to do a special edition of Reggae Aroma, selecting some massive tunes on past Reggae Aromas and some massive pre-released and released tunes. Future wise, Gabre Selassie of Kingston Dub Club and I are coming together to bring roots dub reggae on a night it was hardly ever offered— New Year’s Eve—with the event called Journey To Dub, merging Dubwise Jamaica and the Sunday night meditation, Kingston Dub Club  It will be special to see the fire works from that view influenced by conscious vibrations. Mixtape-wise, you can always look out for new mixtape projects from Yaadcore passing through your residence with roots and culture.

Coming out of Jamaica right now are a lot of rising conscious artists who are breaking boundaries, and creating a buzz and higher demand for reggae music worldwide, as well as appealing to the younger generations—causing a lot of youths to be enlightened with a positive message. Too many artists to mention! There is also a wave building up slowly but surely in the roots reggae selector field which is just more blessing that we need. On the new Reggae Aroma there is a wide variety of selections from well-known artists and not-so-well-known artists, riddims with different sounds and feel. For I, its really whatever I like, popular or not. As long the message is up and the riddim is up, then I up.

Protoje – “Stylin”

This one is brand new from the yet-to-be-released Ancient Future album from Protoje. A message to all the ladies that treat their king like a fling, I sure all the man dem feeling this one.

Protoje featuring Chronixx – “Who Knows”

This track, also from Ancient Future, is a guaranteed HIT from the baby to the elderly. The sweet melody written by Winta James, producer of the track, in combination with the songbird voice of Chronixx, and Protoje’s impeccable flow and lyrics never fails.

InI Kamoze—”Hilly and Gully Ride” (Remix)

The original track produced by Fattis Burrell, now remixed by his son Remus Burrell, shows the timelessness of Ini Kamoze’s vocals, as the track sounds to be recorded in 2014. This remix is definitely a great example of how to maintain the roots feel as a modern sound.

Various Artists—Rootsman Riddim

The first song from this riddim was released in 2012, but its relevance in the session is still growing. Rootsman is the longest lasting reggae riddim in the the last three years, with strong songs from Iba Mahr, Chronixx, Jesse Royal, Jah9, Tarrus Riley and a recently-released Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley.
