Once again, Red Bull Music Academy is taking over NYC in May with a month-long series of innovative music programming. As in previous years, Caribbean music is part of a wide-ranging agenda that spans numerous music genres and eras.
First up, on Saturday May 9th at Verboten in Brooklyn, is Barrioteca Tropical with Que Bajo?!, the NYC party/crew founded by resident DJs Uproot Andy and Geko Jones. Known for their blending of cumbia, reggaeton, salsa, bachata, dancehall, baile funk, merengue, mambo, kuduro, kwaito, funana, tribal guarachero and countless other styles, Que Bajo?! have been carrying the torch when it comes to the mixing of international cultures in NYC since their inception in 2008. Barrioteca Tropical features appearances from an all-star lineup of tropical music legends and torchbearers, including Puerto Rican reggaeton pioneer DJ Playero, Miami Latin bass king DJ Laz, Erick Rincon (3BallMTY), Happy Colors, Pablitomix, and Notch, of Born Jamericans and “Nothin No Go So” fame.
The following afternoon, Sunday, May 10th, it’s time for Yardcore, an outdoor Brooklyn bashment ting at a location TBA. The free, daytime (1pm start) event features music from Federation Sound, Mixpak Sound and the one and only King Jammy (!!!), and live performances from Assassin aka Agent Sasco, Tifa, Ricky Blaze and Lisa Hyper. We’re super hyped for this one, from the lineup down to the wicked artwork designed just for the occasion. Knowing who’s involved, there’s sure to be quite a few surprises.
