In case you didn’t hear, Sounds From the Caribbean was the livest, maddest Caribbean music event at South by Southwest this year, and probably ever. You don’t have to take our word for it—see what Rolling Stone had to say.
LargeUp was the media sponsor for this incredible showcase, organized and presented by Winnie K. Mgmt, Rickie Davies and Coyah Productions, which brought Machel Montano, Mr. Vegas, Gyptian, Kabaka Pyramid, Nyla and Laza Morgan to the Palm Door on Fifth in Austin, Texas, for a sweaty (and rainy) downpour of Carnival x bashment vibes.
We caught the whole thing on video, which we’ve distilled into a 2-minute clip set to the sounds of Machel Montano and Angela Hunte’s “Party Done” (produced by DJ Buddha). It’s that track that arguably brought the evening to its climax, as Machel brought out his “Party Done” collaborator to perform their breakout Carnival 2015 anthem before closing the set Rolling Stone called one of SxSW’s best. But there were nuff highlights all around, from Kabaka’s early roots set to Laza Morgan’s dynamic performance of “One By One” to the Mr. Vegas-coached Bruk it Down contest.
