Impressions: Photos From the Montauk Sessions

Photos by Justin Pallack and James Matteo

On Sunday afternoons and evenings throughout this summer, LargeUp is presenting the Montauk Sessions, a series of live music events featuring reggae, rum and Jamaican food in the East Coast’s coolest surf town.

It’s no secret that reggae and the beach go together like ackee and saltfish. Head to the bar in any beach town at sunset on a summer Sunday, and it’s the first thing you’ll hear. More often than not, though, it’s in the form of an interchangeable cover band playing the same handful of Bob Marley songs, without their original grit. So, we had the idea: Why not bring some of our friends who happen to be legendary reggae artists out to the beach, so the surf set can experience the real thing, just like you would in Kingston or Flatbush, except only steps away from the ocean? And from that, the Montauk Sessions were born.

Already this summer, the series has brought Ky-mani MarleySister Nancy, No-Maddz and Nardo Ranks to some of Montauk’s most prestigious venues, including the Montauk Yacht Club and Gurney’s Montauk Resort.

Holding things down each and every week is our house band, The Skadanks, and resident selectors DJ Gravy and Micro Don of Rice and Peas.

After a few weeks off, The Montauk Sessions will return Sunday, August 9th, with a rare appearance from the legendary Yami Bolo. Until then, scroll through some photos below for a taste of the vibes. See you in Montauk.
