Visual Culture: Wilfred Limonious Gets His Close-Up, In Fine Style

The work of Jamaican illustrator Wilfred Limonious, best known for his artwork for classic dancehall albums including Super Catโ€™s Si Boops Deh and Techniques Recordsโ€™ original Stalag riddim LP, is the subject of a new book and touring exhibition, entitled In Fine Style.

Limoniousโ€™ humorous cartoons, known for their provocative dialogue bubbles and creative caricature of classic Jamaican scenes, helped define the dancehall aesthetic in the 1980s. Although the artist, who began his career drawing comics for the Jamaica Star, passed away without much notice in 1999, the past few years have seen a resurgence of interest in his distinctive designs thanks to the Internet.

The exhibition, curated by Al Fingers and Christopher Bateman, debuts this Saturday at the New Art Exchange in Nottingham, England, where it will remain on view until Jan. 3. The book will see release on One Love Books, publishers of Clarks in Jamaica, in March of 2016.

Until then, check some of our favorite Limonious covers here, and dive into the breadth of the manโ€™s catalog here.
