Here in Brooklyn, we’re still bringing an extra layer out with us half the time, but the temperature’s rising up, and nothing says summertime like live reggae shows. So we’re pleased to announce that LargeUp has partnered with NYC live-music mecca Brooklyn Bowl, located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to celebrate Jamaican Independence in style while launching our new concert series, LargeUp Presents. We have lots of greatness in store for you, but in the meantime…
You can’t really talk about the connection between reggae, dancehall and dubplates without saluting the Dancehall Godfather, Johnny Osbourne. His career transcends generations and genres, his classic track over King Jammy’s ‘Sleng Teng,’ the anthemic ‘Budy Bye’ is possibly the biggest reggae sing-along song ever, borrowed by Arrested Development in their 90’s hit, “Everyday People” and remixed by Major Lazer. Osbourne also appeared on Major Lazer’s hit single, “Jah Nuh Partial” back in 2013 and continues to tour the world with the fervor of a man half his age. While touring all across the globe, the one place he hasn’t done a stage show since 19-how long, is right here where he lives, in Brooklyn, and New York City for that matter. With The Skadanks providing that electrifying, live stage show experience as backing band, this is not to be missed.
As for selections, The Rice and Peas Crew will be on the 1’s and 3’s providing the vibes in the meantime and between time, prepare to dance and possibly learn a few new steps. Advance tickets are available HERE. Expect some unexpected surprise appearances, lots of flag waving and plenty vibes!
UPDATE: Jovi Rockwell will not be appearing at the Jamaican Independence Day Celebration with Johnny Osbourne at Brooklyn Bowl. In her place, we’re bringing a special treat in Blacka Di Danca and the Danca Family. Now, they are not artists per se, but they’re definitely going to put on a performance. If you’ve ever been to a party where this crew showed up, you know what we mean. If not, come find out Friday night!
