Words by Richard “Treats” Dryden
‘Tis the season of fete because Carnival soon come. Cue New York’s own Boom Station to provide the full soca experience. Known for Internet radio since 2011 and their involvement in Brooklyn’s Labor Day Parade, Boom Station linked with VP Records for a mixtape that highlights this year’s biggest soca anthems, as featured on VP Records’ Soca Gold 2016 compilation. Hypasounds’ “How She Like It,” a big anthem for Barbados Crop Over last year which still remains in heavy rotation, kicks off Boom Station’s mix. “Professional” by Ricardo Drue out of Antigua is a big rum-drinking anthem reflecting soca’s evolution into a synth-driven cousin to electronic dance music.
The mix, premieres exclusively today on LargeUp on the same day as the release of Soca Gold 2016. Stream Boom Station’s promo mix below, and find the annual Soca Gold compilation on Spotify
