One of the most visible people on the New York Caribbean music scene, DJ Young Chow is well known for his mixtapes, club appearances and his radio show on NYC’s Hot 97. With “Waist Gal,” the Brooklyn-born Trini selector is stepping into a new role as artist. “Waist Gal” is a very New York-sounding record, blending dancehall, soca, trap and — most crucially here — house (Not tropical house, that real house we used to party to in the ’90s) into a simple, yet catchy party record. There’s no big message here, just a fun track for di gyal dem (and, hopefully, the fellas, too): Just back it up and move your waist, gyal. Fittingly, “Waist Gal” now gets a very New York video, in which we find Young Chow flossing around town in an oversized fur and directs a dance class while wearing fake, jacked teeth.
