As we continue to celebrate Belizean culture in this month of September, we bring you the newest installment of “Homegrown Belize,” the food and travel series from Belize’s own Rajeev “Jeevs’ Pollard. Episode 3 of “Homegrown” takes us to San Pedro, the island paradise located on Ambergris Caye — Yes, the same San Pedro celebrated on Madonna’s classic “La Isla Bonita.”
Here, Jeevs connects with Michelle Nuñez — a former Miss San Pedro, and currently Miss Costa Maya — at Maxi’s Mojito Bar for some morning micheladas, and a variety of ceviche. Maxi’s is a newly-opened bar and eatery from the family behind Elvi’s Kitchen, San Pedro’s most famous restaurant, and a place where the Latin influence on Belize comes into focus. Of course, this is not to the neglect of the country’s Caribbean cuisine, as the bread pudding desert displayed at the end attests.
